Seminar ‘Farmers and rural communities: how to prepare for EU membership’

On 14 May, a seminar entitled “Farmers and Rural Communities: How to prepare for EU membership’ was held at the State Scientific-Research Control Institute of Veterinary Medicinal Products and Feed Additives. The event was organised by the National Association of Agricultural Advisory Services of Ukraine with the support of the Department of Agricultural Development of the Lviv Regional State Administration and the Latvian Rural Consultation and Education Centre.

Seminar participants were welcomed by Tetiana Hetman, Director of the Department of Agricultural Development, who reported on the successful implementation of the State Agrarian Register, an electronic platform created with EU support. Now local farmers and rural residents can quickly apply for state grants and subsidies.

In his speech, Volodymyr Stibel, Director of the State Scientific-Research Control Institute of Veterinary Medicinal Products and Feed Additives, Doctor of Veterinary Science, Professor, noted that the development and well-thought-out self-government of rural communities is a key factor in the successful functioning of the agricultural sector of any European country. Therefore, when talking about Ukraine’s future membership in the European Union, it is important not to forget about attracting investments into the development of rural infrastructure, health care, education and other areas of rural life.

The participants were also welcomed by Andris Kursitis, Director of Education and Training at the Latvian Rural Advisory and Education Centre, who spoke about the strategy of pre-accession preparations, the content and components of EU agricultural and rural development policy.

The main organiser of the seminar, Roman Korinets, Director of the National Academy of Agricultural Sciences of Ukraine, presented the results of his own research on Ukrainians’ perceptions of agro-European integration and spoke about EU financial support to Ukraine.

Mykola Moroz, Head of the Agricultural Strategy Department at the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine, briefed participants on the ministry’s European integration activities. He noted that the country’s agricultural sector is currently at the beginning of accession negotiations and therefore needs to prepare a number of regulations in line with EU requirements.

Ms Laimonta Straujuma, former Minister of Agriculture and Prime Minister of Latvia in 2014-2016, shared Latvia’s experience of EU membership with the audience, describing important European integration mechanisms that her country had introduced on its way to accession.

Aivarārs Lapiņš, Advisor to the Latvian Ministry of Agriculture, Permanent Delegate of Latvia to the OECD and UNESCO, presented an interesting report on the accession/pre-accession assistance toolkit for rural development for EU candidate countries.

Karpars Žurins, Director of the Latvian Centre for Rural Consultation and Training in International Projects, spoke about the role of rural advisory services in the pre-accession period and in ensuring a successful EU integration process.

In general, the seminar became a place of meeting and constructive discussion for representatives of municipalities, business, NGOs, scientific and educational institutions and extension services.

It was also a great pleasure to welcome our old friends and partners to the event: Hryhorii Sedilo, Head of the Department of Entrepreneurship and Trade at the Lviv National University of Environmental Management, Doctor of Economics, Professor Yurii Hubeni, Doctor of Economics, Professor Ihor Yatsiv, Head of the Department of Business Economics, Innovation and Agricultural Extension at the Lviv National University of Veterinary Medicine named after S. Z. Gjytskiy, Professor Pavlo Muzyka, Deputy Director of the Department of Agricultural Development Lyudmyla Honcharenko and other important people.

In conclusion, the seminar was an important step in Ukraine’s preparation for accession to the European Union and provided an opportunity to acquire unique knowledge on the implementation of the best European practices and standards in the domestic agricultural sector, which will undoubtedly help our rural communities to become a driver of economic growth and social development of the state, which in turn will contribute to the stability and confidence of our country in the international arena.

Participation in the iInternational Practical Forum Poultry Farming 2024

Scientists of the Institute took part in the International Practical Forum Poultry Farming 2024, held in Lviv on 16-17 April.

Viktor Muzyka, Doctor of Veterinary Sciences, Professor, Head of the Department of the State Research Institute of Veterinary Preparations, gave a report on the directions and trends in the development of poultry farming in Ukraine. The speaker paid special attention to the approval of certain regulatory acts on the use of antimicrobial veterinary drugs in veterinary medicine and reporting on the volume of their use. He explained the established procedure for the use of antimicrobial drugs in veterinary medicine, considered the problems of microbial resistance to antimicrobial drugs in the concept of the global action plan of the World Organisation for Animal Health, the International Epizootic Bureau “One Health”. Viktor Pavlovych also explained the procedure for conducting monitoring studies of market operators on compliance with the requirements of poultry farms with poultry rearing technology and poultry products without the use of antimicrobials and/or without antimicrobial residues.

Oksana Brezvyn, Doctor of Veterinary Science, Professor, Scientific Secretary, also presented an interesting report on preventing the spread of aspergillosis in poultry. The speaker analysed the role of pathogenic microscopic fungi, zoohygienic conditions of poultry husbandry and feeding in the epizootic chain of aspergillosis in poultry farms. She made a comparative description of the pathogenesis, clinical signs, pathomorphological changes in the process of diagnosing the disease in different species of poultry. She characterised the veterinary products used in the course of therapeutic, preventive and veterinary-sanitary treatments in farms to prevent the disease.

The event was moderated by Mykola Zhyla, Doctor of Veterinary Science, Professor, Senior Researcher.

The Forum was also attended by Volodymyr Stybel, Doctor of Veterinary Science, Professor, Director of the State scientific-Research Control Institute of Veterinary Medicinal Products and Feed Additives, Irena Avdosieva, PhD in Vet., Senior Researcher, Sophia Temnenko, PhD in Economics, Senior Researcher, and Oleg Basarab, Head of the Poultry Sector.

It should be noted that this event has long been a landmark and one of the most authoritative discussion platforms where veterinary science and practice meet. As always, the Forum organisers have succeeded in creating a friendly and relaxed atmosphere in which poultry practitioners, manufacturers of veterinary medicines, feed additives and feed, and scientists from leading universities and research institutes can share their experiences and discuss current issues in the industry.

The event was organised and partnered by Nashe Ptakhivnytstvo, a well-known agricultural magazine on modern technologies in industrial poultry farming.

Participation of the Institute’s scientists in the International Forums ‘Dairy Farm’ and ‘Pig Complex’

 

 

Scientists of the Institute took part in two International Veterinary Forums “Dairy Farm” and “Pig Complex”, which took place in Lviv on 20-21 March. Yurii Kosenko, Deputy Director for International Cooperation and European Scientific Integration, Doctor of Biological Sciences, and Oksana Brezvyn, Scientific Secretary of the Institute, Doctor of Veterinary Sciences, gave presentations on changes in veterinary legislation and the fight against mycotoxicosis.

The Pig Complex Forum was also attended by Iryna Mazur, Deputy Director for Research, PhD in Vet., and Mykola Verkholiuk, Head of the Agency for Veterinary Medicines and Feed Additives, PhD in Vet. Associate Professor. This event provided each veterinarian with valuable professional information aimed at improving animal health, efficiency of animal husbandry and profitability of the farm. The topics discussed by the speakers were relevant and widely applicable in practice. They included disease prevention, maintaining a high immune status in animals, effective methods of preventing stress in animals, high quality vaccination and hygiene of premises. The speakers paid special attention to the prevention of pathologies of the reproductive organs, treatment regimens to combat infectious diseases, experiences in reducing the culling of young animals and protecting the farm from veterinary pathologies. The Forum also discussed the selection of antibacterial drugs, the correct diagnosis of infectious diseases, and pathological examination and differential diagnosis.
